The movie's screenplay by Bill Lancaster, creates a sense of paranoia, and menace. When the scientists hunt for the dog, the animal is attacked by The Thing. Then, as the creature takes hold of people, MacCready decides to take charge. He orders a blood test, and whoever doesn't want to have his blood taken, is The Thing.

The music by Ennio Morricone and Carpenter evokes the unsettling horror of the movie. Director of Photography Dean Cundey, (who worked on Carpenter's Halloween series in the late 1970's, to the early 1980's); and the special effects, assaulted the viewer. In 1982, "The Thing" disturbed people, like the UK's "Xtro", (Harry Bromley Davenport); and the Steven Spielberg produced and directed family science fiction movie, "ET". Lastly, The Thing is about who is The Thing that forms the mystery of the movie...Who is it?...
